Breathe Owl Breathe Concert (and Hayride & Potluck)

6 PM Hayride & Potluck
7:30  Breathe Owl Breathe

Bring your friends and family out to hear the music of  Breathe Owl Breathe, a "long-running Michigan trio [who've] spun their intricate sound so patiently and considerately over the course of more than a decade that they slowly transcended the folk and indie scenes they were born from," as described by reviewer Fred Thomas.

Families are most welcome. Come early and get an up-close look at the animals, vegetable gardens, woods, and fields that make Bluestem Farm an interconnected patchwork of good clean food. For the first part of the evening, just bring yourself, a dish to share, and your place-settings.

Concert is $15 at the door, $10 in advance, here.

This event, like farming, happens rain or shine, but there’s a big barn for cover if the weather’s not good. For your comfort, you might want a chair or blanket to sit on, but if you’re not too particular we’ll have an assortment of things to sit on. Event parking is on the north side of M-32, on Adams Road. No dogs or alcohol, please.

**Please note that if you are relying on electronic navigation to get here, it will steer you wrong. The farm is at M-32 and Adams Road.

Week One CSA Recipe Roundup

3 - 2 - 1 Green Smoothies

Don’t be misled by the name green smoothie—when you use dark berries like blueberries, you can hardly tell full of vegetables.  A whole meal in a glass, this recipe is an excellent way to get nutritious greens into the bellies of the reluctant.

3 cups tender chard, spinach, kale, or arugula
2 cups juice, kefir, coconut milk, or other liquid
1 cup yogurt for the tofu or more tofu for the yogurt
frozen berries, banana, or other fruit
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/4 block of silken tofu
honey or sugar to taste

Substitute more yogurt for the tofu or more tofu for the yogurt. Chunks of frozen banana are great, too.

Some people like to add a spoonful of nut butters instead of or in addition to the tofu. Ground flax seeds also make a good addition, but they will really thicken the smoothie.
Blend until smooth.

Makes about 3 servings.

And three more food ideas for the first week of summer...

High Season CSA Program: Week One

Week one vegetable shares are here! After a hiatus of a couple months (the last share program we offered ended in mid-March) we are delighted to announce we're once again delivering CSA shares to Bellaire, Boyne City, Gaylord, on the farm in East Jordan, and Petoskey.

We often go heavy on the greens in late June, but we're pleased to say that things like beets and carrots are looking great and ought to be coming soon to a share box near you.

Week One Regular Shares
Regular shares get a couple lettuce heads, kale, chard, radish, broccoli raab, cut greens, and a bunch of baby turnips.

Week One Small Shares (including every-other-week shares)
Small shares get a lettuce head, kale, chard, radishes, and cut greens.
